Neat Song

Despite the fact that I'm secular, and this song endorses religion, I am a conservative in American politics and I do think this is a neat song:

Government spending DOES need to decrease. Life DOES start at conception. Homosexuality IS wrong. Government ownership of business is a disaster waiting to happen. The USA DOES need to do its own drilling for oil. etc.

wait a min. If you aren't basing your views on religion...how is homosexuality wrong?

At least the religious nut jobs have an excuse. What is your intolerance based on???????

Cut the crap with calling it intolerant, one can be against a behavior and not be against a person.

And for the record, I do not think homosexuality should be illegal, nor do I think homosexuals are bad people for doing that kinda stuff.

Rather, people should be heterosexuals, and marriage is between man and woman.

Homosexuality is wrong because one gender is built for the other making homosexuality unnatural. Children growing up also needs the support of the mother and the father.

But as a secular person, how can you limit marriage to one male and one female? Why can't it be "two people"? After all, in religion the purpose of marriage is procreation. In secular culture, it's... well, there really is no purpose. No wonder so many people are living common law these days.
But this is the basic argument - you're drawn an arbitrary line in the sand, but based on what?

I can't agree with that. There's being with your wife/(husband if you are a woman) and hmm let's see, what else, procreation?

You can do the exact same thing in a common law relationship, or long-term dating. A marriage implies a wedding and a licence being signed. If you can get all of the same without it why bother?

No you can't.

>> If you can get all of the same without it why bother?

It's not the same thing.

What's the difference between a long-term common law relationship and a marriage other than the wedding album? After a few years, the law mandates formal divorce in both cases with all the attendant property and child custody splitting. Many married women no longer take their husband's surname and some common law women do. So it really is the same thing. Unless you can point out a single significant difference.

Marriage, between man and woman, is special. It creates life. Homosexual marriage can never ever ever be equal to heterosexual marriage.

Quite frankly Garnel, it is destructive for you to try to say religion is necessary for morality, to advance your agenda.

The laws of mathematics exist regardless of whether or not the supernatural really exists, there is absolutely no reason why the laws of morality can't exist independently of the supernatural by way of inference.

Even in the Torah, Cain was punished for murder long before a commandment against murder was given. The Torah agrees - morality exists on its own without religion.

First of all, I was contrasting heterosexual marriage vs. heterosexual common law relationships. My point still stands.

And if creating life is so special, then what about lesbians who opt for artificial insemination? Or homosexuals who adopt?

SJ said...

>> My point still stands.

No it doesn't.

>> And if creating life is so special, then what about lesbians who opt for artificial insemination?

That's not natural.

>> Or homosexuals who adopt?

that's not even creating life.

Garnel Ironheart said...

So let me get this straight - lesbians undergoing artificial insemination is unnatural. What about a heterosexual couple that undergoes IVF or something like that? Are they also unnatural?

Bottom line: there is no secular reason a relationship of two or three or more caring people, irrespective of gender, cannot be called a marriage. The term isn't copyrighted, except by religion. You are drawing an arbitrary red line based on your own personal feelings. Now there's nothing wrong with that, but you must recognize that it's totally arbitrary, nothing deeper than that.

Heterosexual is natural.

>> You are drawing an arbitrary red line based on your own personal feelings.

So I guess God was drawing an arbitrary red line based on his own personal feelings punishing Cain for murder before God disallowed murder, huh?

Just like 1+1=2 exists irrespective of the supernatural or lack thereof, morality exists irrespective of the supernatural or lack thereof.

It causes considerable damage to people for religious apologists to try to say that you need religion for morality because I have seen a few atheists agree with that when they shouldn't.

And the term marriage is not copyrighted by religion that's absurd.

heterosexuality = normal.
homosexuality = not normal.

It's self evident.

My, my, aren't we intolerant and judgemental? You sound... religious!

No wonder OTD kicked you out. Mind you, he still hasn't figured out which of his so-called friends I really am.

{Cue evil laughter}

Putz, i'm not saying they are bad people for being homosexuals, rather people should be heterosexuals.

A person can do something incorrect and still be a good person.

BTW you sure aren't me that's for sure. XD

Do you equate natural with good in general?

What do you think about contraceptives? Antibiotics? All the unnatural conveniences of modern life? Or is homosexuality unnatural in a special way?

And do you think homosexuals could chose to become straight if they wanted to?
