I could criticize the 2009 Star Trek movie on multiple levels
- blowing up Vulcan and Romulus was very lazy writing after the original set of movies had Quonos facing ecological disaster.
- it was babyish just showing Kirk sliding into command of the Enterprise as if in real life you can just WALK into commanding a huge ship without an incredible amount of life experience.
- the protagonists weren't put into enough danger you knew right away they were going to win.
The 2013 movie was simply incredible and a vast improvement since the 2009 movie. Star Trek into darkness has Kirk face his limitations as a Captain and has the crew of the Enterprise face their mortality in ways that the 2009 movie did not.
The 2013 movie also did a better job than the 2009 movie in displaying the values of Star Trek; trying to be good people under difficult circumstances, and hoping for and fighting for a better future.
I went into the theater as a skeptic of Star Trek Into Darkness (I thought it was gonna suck), but I came out amazed.
