I don't see the overall benefit of going to this school over any other. Students should not be required to enroll in Jewish studies. If it is important to them, they will study it on their own. Pretty much all YU students are the same. Most have grown up locally and Orthodox and developed a parochial orthodox mindset which makes them fearful of outside ideas. College is supposed to be a place where controversial new ideas are entertained. That is the whole point of intellectual exploration. At YU, students and administrators alike are afraid of ideas which they think may ruin their idyllic enclave of spirituality and so they only see what they want to see. That is being both academically dishonest and lazy.

Lastly, a liberal arts education is overrated. If you are going to study something, pick one thing and become good at it. A liberal arts education means you know a little bit about many things but are good at none.The positive side is that the faculty and administrators are generally pretty friendly and helpful and I have been able to develop strong relationships with some of them. They are pouring a lot of money into the sciences which is good if you are interested in that. They have great financial aid packages and lots of free food. Also an excellent track record for law school and med school. Basically, your decision to go to YU should be based on whether or not you like learning Torah. If you do then you will be happy. Look, if your thinking about coming to YU make sure you know EXACTLY what your getting your self into. If your a religious guy who loves learning torah but also wants to get a degree then it will probably be good for you. However, beware! If you like learning too much you probably won't like YU because it doesn't offer enough learning. There is a very small group of people that love YU. The rest don't like it because it has too much or too little torah learning. Make sure you realize that your going to be doing 16 hours of Jewish studies on top of your secular course load. Be aware that there is NO social life on campus. Also if you want to meet girls, your going to have to be very proactive. Oh yeah, and be aware that when you come you will be surrounded by a lot of people that hate it here. So, if you don't want to be around people who complain that the school sucks, then I wouldn't come. But, then again, if you want a VERY affordable school (that for some strange reason has great connections) with a student body of Jewish orthodox males then YU is probably for you. Oh yeah, and also be aware that a lot of guys at YU are not religious. I'd say about thirty percent don't keep shabbat. JRKmommy only gives half the equation for being saved in both Catholicism and Protestantism. Both brands of Christianity require faith AND good works they just say it differently. Catholicism just says faith and good works are required. Protestantism gives a more elaborate explanation and says that being saved is free upon believing but good works are required to be obedient. Practically though it's the same thing.

There are christians who believe that the jews need to believe in Jesus to be saved and there are those who don't. I don't believe that the jews need to believe in Jesus to be saved.

Secondly, if someone gets killed by a jew, does that person automatically go to heaven or is he judged individually? Of course he's judged individually so asking what happens to the souls of jews murdered in the holocaust is just nastyness.

Matthew 7:21-23 says "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity."

I highly doubt that JRK would be so nasty as to suggest that nazism and the holocaust is within the will of Jesus Christ.

Also there's Hebrews 10:26-27 "If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God." I'm pretty sure that the nazis were aware that God don't appreciate murder. This also refutes any suggestion that Christianity just lets you do what ever you want and ask for forgiveness after like it's a game.

HOW ORTHODOX JUDAISM HELPS YOU

-> It works on you psychologically by making you feel that everything you do you are getting closer to God.

-> Kosher meat is inspected for deformities in the limbs of the animals

-> When you are unemployed, you are still able to maintain a sleep cycle by waking up for shacharit.

-> It keeps your brain active by studying torah and you can get experience working with more than 1 language.

-> It automatically gives you something to accomplish in life by studying as much of the religious texts as possible and thus also a reason to socialize with others in the process.

to me, its very simple.

if one has a desire to live a life with meaning, with a purpose, orthodox judaism is a good choice for many reasons.

first, its how I (we) grew up. we know it, we are familiar with it (boo hoo, i can [I'm pretty sure Ksil meant can't] eat pork). familiarity is comfort.

second, the focus on family and community. children, schools, education, hatzalah, shuls, gatherings, bar mitzvahs...these social interactions are lovely. (and if you are traveling to india or peru or peurto rico you can get kosher food and a minyan, how nice is that? community)

In terms of living with meaning, it's a big beautiful world out there. I'm sure there's SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMETHING that speaks to a thinking person that a thinking person would want to accomplish in life.

I have not heard of anything in my time in Orthdox Judaism that allows someone else to have points over you doing a "mitzvah" except basically saying mourners kaddish for a deceased relative, or peripherally if you encourage doing a so called mitzvah you can get points for it. Kletzky did not do anything to encourage mitzvah performance. He just got murdered.

So basically it seems like Aish is exploiting the murder to further its own ends of social enginnering using ideas that seem to have no basis in "halacha."
